SXSW Critics Review, Ponderosa Stomp, AUSTIN AMERICAN-STATESMAN
SXSW CRITIC RECOMMENDATIONS
These acts made an impression at SXSW
The festival's over, but the music plays on.

Our crew of SXSW critics is still catching up on sleep after the four-day musical extravaganza. Before they dozed off, each recommended one act that made a lasting impression — and that you should check out:

Ponderosa Stomp:
Anyone who can swing it should head to New Orleans for the full-on version of the Ponderosa Stomp on May 2 (in between Jazzfest weekends). It would be worth the trip just to see sensational singer-guitarist Rockie Charles tear it up again with Willie Tee and Stanley "Buckwheat" Dural on keyboards, but the huge lineup will also include Roky Erickson and none other than Dave Bartholomew, who wrote all those Fats Domino hits.

If that's not in the budget, although you won't find the Stomp artists touring together, louisianamusicfactory.com is a good place to look for their recordings. You can search by artist name, so you'll find not only their solo releases but Li'l Buck Sinegal and Dural playing together on zydeco king Clifton Chenier's "Frenchin' the Boogie" and Willie Tee whooping it up with the Wild Magnolias, Dr. John and others on "Mardi Gras Indians Super Sunday Showdown." And be on the lookout for Dural's renowned band, Buckwheat Zydeco, which does tour heavily.
