DJ Soul Sister and Brice Nice present the premier 45 showcase in New Orleans for the fourth year running! 10 DJs, one half hour each of heavy-duty 45 madness! Hip Drop will be held on Thursday night from 10:00 pm - 3:00 am on September 23rd to tie into the new Stomp weekend and is the dedicated event that night, Ponderosa Stomp Eve! We are also in an exciting new location, DBA on Frenchman Street. DBA is known for their love of New Orleans and roots music of all kinds, a great beer selection, and a hip but down to earth clientele. This will be the place to be Thursday night!
Folks who love raw rock n roll, soul, funk, country, swamp pop, blues, jazz and more come from all over the world for the Ponderosa Stomp and the line-up of artists performing on Friday and Saturday night is nothing short of legendary. In addition to Hip Drop, the weekend includes two huge nights at HOB, two days of music conference, film series and the return of last year’s hugely successful Ponderosa Stomp Record Show on both Friday and Saturday, now in partnership with Shakey’s Record Fair out of NYC.
The schedule is tight and the line-up is limited to just 10 DJs showcasing a heavyweight selection of funk, soul, and garage slabs. All records played at Hip Drop are original and designed for dancing, not just obscurity!
Our host needs little introduction, but just in case, DJ Soul Sister is New Orleans own queen of funk and rare groove. She hosts the Soul Power show on WWOZ and the hugely popular Hustle! Party every Saturday night. She’s DJ’d on just about every stage in New Orleans, from Essence to Voodoo to Jazz Fest and turns folks on to her Right On parties throughout the year. The Hip Drop was her idea!
Brice Nice is a New Orleans DJ and co-presenter of the Hip Drop with DJ Soul Sister. He hosts the Block Party radio show on WWOZ and DJs weekly. He runs Allons Records whose Michael Hurtt and the Haunted Hearts are regular Stomp performers and the punk label Raw Sugar. He is a music historian and archivist of raw New Orleans music, from soul to punk to rap.
Beyondadoubt is a Memphis native who has been turning Portland, Oregon onto great soul music through her massive monthly I’ve Got A Hole In My Soul. She works at Mississippi Records, makes her own music, and knows a lot of southern rap.
Todd-O-Phonic is a legend of Hoboken, NJ and a Hip Drop regular. As a DJ on WFMU, and the brains behind Telstar Records (among others) Todd digs up rare slabs of insane rock n roll and R&B to feed to the hungry masses.
Rambo Salinas is a Texas native, living in Minneapolis. He runs Hotpants a rare funk soul dance night, 3 years strong. He specializes in rare Chicano funk and soul from South Texas and East LA. This is his first gig in the crescent city.
Ericka Schiche is originally from Houston, but currently based in NYC. She’s a DJ, independent art critic, and writer who DJ’s at various New York City spots including a residency at Botanica Bar. She is a frequent contributor to Funk45.com and this is her second Hip Drop.
The Hook Up
The Hook Up is a Memphis DJ who helped organize the DJ night when Ponderosa Stomp moved temporarily to Memphis after Katrina. He does a monthly DJ night called Rhythm and Booze and hosts a radio show on WEVL called In The Basement.
Tarik Thornton is a New Orleans native who is spinning his first true 45 set in his hometown. He has played in clubs and on the radio in Minneapolis, Milwaukee, NYC and New Orleans.
Seven B is a San Francisco record collector and DJ originally from Gulfport, Mississippi. Brice Nice met him at Eddie Bo’s Check Your Bucket Café many years ago and they’ve battling over rare 45s ever since.
Jim Dandy is one of the loyal Ponderosa Stomp denizens from Melbourne, Australia. He made his DJ debut back at the second Hip Drop in a raucous late night slot with Mohair Slim. Since then he’s been tearing up the clubs down under and we’re happy to have him back with a slot to shine all his own.
Noel Waggener specializes in rare Tex-Mex Soul and Funk. He founded the Soul Happening night in Austin over 12 years ago and is currently selecting tracks for Jazzman’s Texas Funk vol. 2. He is co-owner of Heavy Light Records whose roster includes The Relatives, who will be playing a set at the stomp.
