King Lloyd Band

Listen to King Lloyd with Rudy Richard and Slim Harpo on Scratch My Back

Raised in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, King Lloyd was drafted and sent out west to work for Uncle Sam. Following his army discharge in Los Angeles, the young King Lloyd headed over to the Whisky A GoGo to see his homeboy Mr. "Scratch My Back" himself, the original King Bee Slim Harpo. As luck would have it, Slim's bass player was sick and the King was quickly deputized to play bass. Slim liked his playing, and Lloyd joined the band on the spot. After Slim died, the King stayed out west, where his brother eventually put out his debut 45 "Don't Play With Fire" on his own label. Moving back south to Centreville, Mississippi, King Lloyd formed a band with his nephew Bernell on drums and godson Deion on bass. This rough-and-tumble trio still slays 'em every other weekend at the Fox Lounge in back-of-town New Orleans. With the funky grooves going from "Don't Cry No More" to "Rock Me Baby" to "Hole In the Wall" to "Atomic Dog", King Lloyd sho nuff knows how to play the real shit.
