Charlie Miller
Charlie Miller has long been one of the best trumpet players in New Orleans. After initially encountering Mac Rebennack in the 8th grade, Charlie joined forces with him a few short years later at Cosimo's recording studio where he played on and years later at Cosimo's recording studio where he played on and arranged sessions. Charlie migrated to New York after high school graduation and there he played in Machito and Ray Barretto's bands and was a member of Orchestra Harlow. He got a chance to play with Thelonious Monk and also hosted a young Wynton Marsalis during his first stay there, who took the opportunity to have Charlie show him around his adopted home city. After 28 years in New York, Charlie moved home, becoming Dr. John's bandleader and playing on Mac's tribute to the Crescent City, "Goin' Back to New Orleans." He has a double whammy of recent solo recordings available, "Peace Horn" and "Fonk Horn".
